Painting Project Timeline: What to Expect from Start to Finish

Painting Project Timeline: What to Expect from Start to Finish

One of the most common sources of homeowner stress during a painting project isn't the quality of the work, it's uncertainty about the process. When does the project actually start? How long will my house be disrupted? When do I pay? What do I need to do to prepare?

At Anthony's Painting, we believe clarity reduces stress. Here's an honest walk-through of what to expect from the moment you contact us to the day the project is complete.

Phase 1: Estimate and Planning (1, 3 Days to Receive Estimate)

Initial contact. You call, email, or submit a request through our website. We'll follow up promptly, typically within 24 hours on business days, to schedule an on-site estimate.

On-site estimate visit. One of our estimators walks the project with you. We look at the scope of work, the surfaces involved, the current condition, and any specific concerns or priorities you have. This typically takes 30, 60 minutes for a residential project. We ask questions, we don't just measure and leave.

Written estimate delivery. You receive a detailed written estimate specifying exactly what's included: surfaces to be painted, prep work to be performed, products to be used, number of coats, and total cost. For most residential projects, you'll have this within 1, 3 business days of the site visit.

Contract and deposit. If you'd like to proceed, we sign a written contract and collect a scheduling deposit, typically 25% of the project cost. This secures your place in our schedule.

Phase 2: Scheduling and Preparation (1, 4 Weeks Depending on Season)

Project scheduling. Based on our current schedule and your timing preferences, we agree on a project start date. During peak spring and summer seasons, lead times may be 2, 4 weeks. During fall and winter (for interior work), scheduling is often faster.

Your preparation before we arrive. We'll advise you on what to do ahead of the project start:

  • For interior work: Remove or cover furniture in the rooms being painted; take down wall art, mirrors, and curtains; clear surfaces of personal items; remove outlet covers and switch plates if you prefer (we can do this as well)
  • For exterior work: Clear the perimeter of the home of furniture, vehicles, and outdoor items; trim vegetation away from the house if possible; ensure we have access to all exterior surfaces

Phase 3: The Active Project (Project Duration Varies)

Interior project timelines:

  • Single room: 1, 2 days
  • Whole floor or 3, 4 rooms: 2, 4 days
  • Full interior of an average home: 5, 8 days
  • Cabinet painting: 3, 5 days including cure time before reinstallation

Exterior project timelines:

  • Single elevation: 1, 2 days
  • Full exterior of average home: 3, 6 days (weather dependent)
  • Larger or complex homes: 1, 2 weeks

What happens each day: Our crew arrives at the agreed start time, typically 7:30, 8:00 AM. We set up protection, perform the day's prep or painting, clean up thoroughly at the end of each day, and leave the space as orderly as possible. You shouldn't feel like your home has been taken over.

Communication during the project. We're accessible throughout. If a question comes up, if we discover something unexpected, or if the scope changes for any reason, we discuss it with you before proceeding, not after.

Phase 4: Completion and Final Walkthrough

Cleanup. Paint tarps, masking tape, and protective materials are removed. All surfaces are cleaned of any accidental paint. Hardware is replaced. The space is returned to normal.

Walkthrough with you. We walk through the completed project with you before we consider it done. This is your opportunity to point out anything that needs attention, a missed area, a spot that needs touching up, any concern at all. We address it before the final invoice.

Final payment. Final payment is collected upon your satisfaction with the completed work. We don't consider a project finished until you do.

Touch-up paint. We leave the remaining paint (labeled by room and color) for you to use for future touch-ups. This is a standard practice that most homeowners find very useful over the years.
