Cabinet Painting Trends for 2026: Colors, Finishes, and What to Expect

Kitchen cabinet painting has become one of the most requested interior services we provide at Anthony's Painting, and for good reason. A quality cabinet paint job can transform a kitchen, making it look years newer and dramatically more current, for a fraction of the cost of a full cabinet replacement.

Here's what's trending in 2026 and what you should know before starting a cabinet project.

Why Cabinet Painting Is a Smart Investment

New kitchen cabinets in the Lehigh Valley can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $50,000 or more depending on materials, layout, and installation. A professional cabinet paint job on an existing set of well-built cabinets typically ranges from $2,000, $5,000 and can produce results that rival new cabinets visually, particularly if the boxes are solid wood or high-quality plywood construction.

The math is compelling: same layout, same hardware (or updated hardware at modest cost), dramatically refreshed appearance.

2026 Color Trends We're Seeing in Lehigh Valley Kitchens

Two-tone cabinetry continues to dominate. Upper cabinets in a lighter color, white, soft cream, or warm greige, paired with lower cabinets in a deeper accent color remains the most popular choice we're seeing. It adds visual interest without committing entirely to a bold palette.

Top combinations we've applied this year:

  • White uppers + navy lowers (Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore remains enormously popular)
  • Off-white uppers + sage green lowers (particularly on Shaker-style doors)
  • White uppers + charcoal gray lowers for a sophisticated, contemporary look

Warm greens are the breakout color. Forest green, sage, and olive-toned cabinets have shifted from trend to mainstream. Sherwin-Williams Rosemary and Benjamin Moore's Tarrytown Green are seeing heavy demand.

Warm whites and creams are replacing cool whites. The stark, bright white kitchen cabinet look has peaked. Homeowners are moving toward Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace, White Dove, and Swiss Coffee, whites with just enough warmth to feel inviting rather than clinical.

Finishes That Last: What to Use on Cabinets

Cabinet paint needs to be harder, smoother, and more durable than standard wall paint. High-traffic surfaces that are touched, wiped, and subjected to heat and moisture demand a different product.

Our preferred approaches for cabinet finishing:

  • Water-based alkyd enamel, provides the durability and hardness of oil-based paint with the low-odor, easy cleanup of water-based products; Benjamin Moore Advance and Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel are our go-to products
  • Conversion varnish, for clients who want a truly furniture-grade finish; this requires professional spray equipment and proper ventilation but produces an exceptionally durable result
  • A minimum of two topcoats over properly primed surfaces; sometimes three on high-use areas like around the stove

Sheen level on cabinets: we typically recommend semi-gloss or satin. Semi-gloss holds up better to cleaning but shows brush marks more easily on flat panel doors. Satin is more forgiving and still highly durable.

What the Professional Cabinet Painting Process Involves

A proper cabinet painting job is significantly more involved than painting walls. Our process includes:

  1. Removal of all doors, drawers, and hardware, painting in place leaves brush marks and paint drips in the hinge areas
  2. Degreasing all surfaces thoroughly, kitchen grease is one of the most serious adhesion killers
  3. Sanding to prepare the surface and give the primer something to bite into
  4. Priming with a high-adhesion primer
  5. Filling any dings or defects and re-sanding
  6. Applying finish coats, sprayed when possible for a glass-smooth result, brushed and rolled only with specific techniques when spray isn't available
  7. Reassembly after full cure

The process typically takes 3, 5 days from start to finish. Plan to have your kitchen minimally functional during this time.
